Here, we share the basics of aquaculture, what it is, and how it works in an easy to understand pictures. How does aquaculture work? What are the advantages and disadvantages of aquaculture?
Aquaculture has been around for several thousand years, but it only became a viable means of food production during the 1960s when advances in technology, breeding and farming methods were developed. Fish are raised all over the world in specially-designed ponds that can be completely enclosed. A water current is supplied to keep them oxygenated and remove wastes from their environment.
By design, a fish farm is much more free from risks that could affect the viability of such a venture than traditional aquaculture. Farmed fish are generally much healthier than wild caught salmon or tuna.
